The resident collaborative dance company of
the University of Michigan Department of Dance

Picture
Formed in 1985, Ann Arbor Dance Works was the resident dance company of the University of Michigan Department of Dance 1985-2019. In 2019, when artistic director Jessica Fogel retired from University of Michigan, Ann Arbor Dance Works paused its activities. Stay tuned for future projects.

Dedicated to the collaborative process, the company shared a wide-ranging repertory with audiences.  In addition to producing works by resident U-M Dance faculty choreographers, the company hosted guest choreographers from the US and abroad. Designers, poets, videographers, visual artists, scholars, and composers collaborated with company members, contributing to the creation of innovative and multi-layered works of resonance, depth, and beauty. Since its inception, Ann Arbor Dance Works produced choreography to critical and popular acclaim in New York City, throughout the Midwest, and internationally. The company also produced unique projects in the Ann Arbor community, including the creation of several large-scale site dances with a variety of community partners.

"Audience members could feel an intimate connection with all the performers. [The program's works] were exhilarating.... evocative.... glowing.... radiantly danced"  Kate O’Neill, Dance Magazine

“wonderful dancing,…clever choreography, smart and witty, artful and artless, …evocative…beautiful”  Susan Nisbett, annarbor.com
