Jennifer Harge
|
Jennifer Harge is a performer, dance maker, and educator, working at the intersection of contemporary dance, African American culture, and choreographies of protest. Her creative work has been made for both site specific and proscenium stage performances--most recently at the Detroit Institute of Arts, Music Hall Center for Performing Arts, Pulitzer Arts Foundation, Standard ToyKraft (NYC), Dayton Contemporary Dance Company 2, and in her grandmother’s basement. In 2014 she founded Harge Dance Stories to create a platform for black bodies and contemporary dance making. She holds a MFA from University of Iowa as a Dean’s Graduate Fellow and a BFA from University of Michigan.
This class will move between past and present, African and European, & secular and sacred as a way of honoring and challenging movement ideologies within the contemporary technique class. While my values and physical syntax will often lead the room, there will be space for individualized and improvisatory practices. This class will also work to be community oriented; in that, I will not be the sole director or proprietor of questions and/or answers. The goal is to facilitate a room that allows different voices to lead and different approaches to movement to be seen. |

Dance 405, Section 102
***Grads should be able to get credit for the Yoga class under DANCE 405.
Course Description:
This class is an introduction to Ashtanga Yoga, as taught by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois of Mysore, India. Week by week, we will gradually learn the postural sequence of the primary series. The sequence of postures will be a vehicle for studying the internal practice of ashtanga yoga, a three-part awareness technique called tristhana. The elements of tristhana are: (1) breathing with sound,
(2) bandha (internal locks in the subtle tissues of the abdomen) and (3) driste (set gazing points held with relaxed focus). Short weekly assignments will provide context on the history and culture of classical yoga practice, especially the ashtanga method. If needed, anatomical or technical instruction will be offered as the weekly homework.
Class times:
Tuesday & Thursday, 4:00-6:00 PM. May 2-June 15.
Location:
Dance Building, on the backside of the U-M Central Campus Recreation Building (CCRB)
Registration/Credit:
Open to all for registration through Wolverine Access. This is a 1-credit class taught by Rachel Garcia.
Note:
If you are enrolled in AADW Modern Technique, there are four yoga class sessions you will be missing during the two-week Gillen residency. These are excused if you agree to make up the four classes in Rachel Garcia’s or Angela Jamison’s yoga sessions in the community. Rachel will explain the details at her first class.
